SSC CGL DEST — The Real Rules
Verified directly from SSC's own Combined Graduate Level notification (ssc.gov.in), Sections 13.9.10 and 16.2. This is genuinely different in shape from every other exam here — there's no WPM floor at all. Instead you must stay under a maximum error percentage that depends on your category, and mistake definitions come from SSC's own shared evaluation guidelines for its typing tests.

How the Error Percentage Actually Works
Mistake categories come from the same SSC evaluation guidelines used for CHSL, but the pass condition is completely different: instead of a Net WPM floor, it's a maximum error percentage, and that maximum changes by category.
- Full mistake (1.0): omitted word, wrong word, extra word, spelling error
- Half mistake (0.5): spacing, punctuation, wrong capitalisation, transposition
Error % = Mistakes ÷ Master passage words × 100 — measured against the full passage, not just what you typed. The denominator being fixed (rather than shrinking to match your own output) is the one detail this codebase infers rather than quotes directly — it follows from "omission" and "incomplete words" both counting as mistakes in SSC's guidelines, which only produces the well-documented "incomplete passage increases your error %" effect if the passage length stays fixed.

Not yet enforced here: SSC's own instructions also treat a hand-spaced paragraph (instead of pressing Tab) as a half-mistake. This practice page doesn't detect Tab presses yet, so only the category-based error % above is actually checked.

- What speed do I need to pass?
- There isn't a WPM figure at all — SSC CGL DEST passes on a maximum ERROR PERCENTAGE instead, and it depends on your category: UR ≤ 20% errors, OBC/EWS ≤ 25%, all other categories (SC/ST/PwBD/ESM) ≤ 30% — taken directly from the official notification, Section 16.2.
- How is the error percentage actually calculated?
- Error % = (Total mistakes ÷ Total words in the full master passage) × 100 — measured against the whole passage, not just what you personally typed. That means an unfinished passage counts every untyped word as an omission (a mistake), directly increasing your error percentage — finishing the passage matters as much as typing it cleanly.
- How long is the test, and how much do I need to type?
- 15 minutes, on a passage of about 2,000 key depressions (roughly 400 words) — confirmed directly from the official notification, Section 13.9.10.
- Is this the same as SSC CHSL's typing test?
- No — different exam entirely. CHSL uses a simple Net WPM floor (35 English / 30 Hindi). CGL's DEST has no WPM floor at all, just the category-dependent error percentage above. The mistake categories themselves (Full/Half) are the same document, though — SSC uses one shared evaluation guideline across its typing tests.
- Is this test compulsory, and does it affect my final marks?
- Mandatory for all posts, but qualifying only — no marks are added to your merit score. You simply need to clear your category's error-percentage ceiling to advance.
- Does the site check the Tab-key paragraph rule mentioned in SSC's own instructions?
- Not yet. SSC's Annexure-I does treat a hand-spaced paragraph as a half-mistake, but this practice page doesn't currently detect Tab presses — only the headline rule (the category-based max error %) is enforced here. Worth keeping in mind on the real exam even though this practice test won't penalize it.
