If you've ever taken a typing test, you've seen a WPM score. But what exactly does it mean, what's considered good, and how can you improve yours?
WHAT DOES WPM MEAN?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It measures how many words you can type in 60 seconds. In most typing tests, one "word" is defined as 5 characters — including spaces and punctuation. So if you type 250 characters in a minute, your WPM is 50.
💡 Formula: WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes elapsed
WHAT IS A GOOD WPM SCORE?
- Under 30 WPM — Beginner. Likely using hunt-and-peck method.
- 30–50 WPM — Average. Most casual computer users fall here.
- 50–70 WPM — Above average. Comfortable and productive.
- 70–90 WPM — Fast. Better than most office workers.
- 90–120 WPM — Very fast. Professional typist level.
- 120+ WPM — Elite. Competitive typist territory.
The global average is around 40 WPM. If you can reach 60–70 WPM with good accuracy, you're ahead of the vast majority of people.
TypingBIRDS shows your WPM live as you type. Results in under a minute — no account needed.

Raw WPM without accuracy is meaningless. If you type 100 WPM but make 10 errors per minute, your actual output is slow and frustrating to fix. Most platforms show adjusted WPM — which subtracts a penalty for each error. This is a much better measure of real-world typing ability.
💡 Goal: Aim for 95%+ accuracy at whatever speed you're practicing. Speed without accuracy is just noise.
HOW IS WPM MEASURED IN TYPINGBIRDS?
TypingBIRDS calculates WPM in real-time as you type. At the end of each session you see your raw WPM, accuracy percentage, and personal best. The Ghost Racing mode shows your previous best as a ghost cursor — so you're literally racing against yourself, character by character.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR WPM
- Learn touch typing — use all 10 fingers, stop looking at the keyboard
- Practice daily — 10 minutes a day beats occasional long sessions
- Focus on accuracy first — speed follows naturally
- Use harder modes — Sudden Death in TypingBIRDS forces accuracy
- Track progress — seeing improvement motivates you to continue
WHAT WPM DO YOU NEED FOR DIFFERENT JOBS?
- General office work: 40–50 WPM minimum
- Data entry: 60–80 WPM required
- Transcription: 75–100 WPM
- Secretary / admin: 60–75 WPM
- Programmer: Accuracy matters more than raw speed
Even outside professional requirements, typing faster means spending less mental energy on the mechanics of writing — leaving more brainpower for actual thinking.
