Raavi is the standard phonetic keyboard layout for typing Punjabi (Gurmukhi) on computers in India. It is the layout used in government exams, offices, and most Punjabi typing jobs across Punjab. Almost all Punjabi typing tests — including PSSSB, Punjab Police, and state PSC exams — use the Raavi layout.
The Raavi layout maps Gurmukhi characters to QWERTY keyboard keys in a phonetic pattern — meaning similar-sounding characters are placed on the same key as their English equivalents. For example, the key for ਕ (ka) is mapped to k, and ਸ (sa) is mapped to m.
💡 TypingBIRDS uses the Raavi keyboard layout for Punjabi mode. You can see the full key mapping by clicking the keyboard icon in the game or checking the Help section.

WHICH PUNJAB GOVERNMENT EXAMS REQUIRE PUNJABI TYPING?
- PSSSB (Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board): Clerk, Junior Clerk, Data Entry Operator — Punjabi typing required
- Punjab Police: Head Constable Ministerial — typing test in Punjabi and English
- Punjab State PSC: Various clerical posts require Punjabi typing at 25–30 WPM
- Punjab Education Department: Clerk posts — Punjabi typing is mandatory
- Various municipal and district offices: Punjabi typing at 25 WPM minimum
The standard requirement for most Punjab government typing tests is 25–30 WPM in Punjabi using the Raavi layout.
Switch to Punjabi mode in TypingBIRDS and type real Gurmukhi text. Track your WPM, practice with the Raavi layout, and build speed for your exam.
▶ OPEN PUNJABI MODE FREEHOW TO SWITCH TO PUNJABI MODE ON TYPINGBIRDS
- Open typingbirds.com in your browser
- Look for the language toggle button in the game interface — it shows PA / EN
- Click PA to switch to Punjabi (Gurmukhi) mode
- The text display switches to Gurmukhi script
- Your keyboard now works in Raavi layout — start typing
Your WPM is tracked the same way as English mode — every session records your speed and accuracy, and Ghost Racing works in Punjabi mode too, so you can race your personal best.
TIPS FOR LEARNING RAAVI LAYOUT FAST
- Start with the most common characters: ਸ, ਰ, ਨ, ਤ, ਕ, ਮ, ਲ, ਹ appear in almost every Punjabi word — drill these first
- Learn matras (vowel signs) early: ਾ, ਿ, ੀ, ੁ, ੂ, ੇ, ੈ, ੋ, ੌ are used constantly — getting them on muscle memory unlocks fluency fast
- Print the key map: Tape a printed Raavi layout chart above your keyboard for the first week — do not look at it unless you are stuck
- Type real Punjabi sentences, not just individual characters — the combinations are what build speed
- Practice the danda (।): Shift+. produces the Punjabi full stop — easy to forget under exam pressure
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH 25 WPM IN PUNJABI?
If you already type English comfortably and just need to learn the Raavi layout:
- Week 1: Learn the most common character keys — very slow, lots of looking at the chart
- Week 2: Common words start feeling familiar — 8–12 WPM
- Week 3: Speed increases quickly as patterns become automatic — 15–20 WPM
- Week 4–5: Reaching 25–30 WPM with good accuracy is realistic
💡 Punjabi typing feels harder than English at first because of the matras (vowel signs) that attach to consonants. Once you get the matra keys into muscle memory, your speed accelerates sharply.
OTHER ONLINE PUNJABI TYPING TOOLS
While TypingBIRDS is the only tool with a full WPM game and Ghost Racing for Punjabi, here are other resources worth knowing:
- Lipikaar: Phonetic Punjabi input — easier to learn but not used in government exams
- Google Input Tools: Transliteration-based — again not exam-relevant
- ISM (Indian Script Manager): Used in some government offices, worth practicing separately if your exam specifies it
For exam preparation, always practice on the exact layout your exam uses. PSSSB and most Punjab government exams use Raavi layout on Unicode font — which is exactly what TypingBIRDS uses.
